I’ve earned $150k via Upwork, Fiverr, Medium, and through referrals – Here’s what I’m doing.

If you’re waiting to be lucky in the freelancing world, you’re doing it wrong. It’s a mixture of hard work, persistence, and self-development. I’ve earned $150k via freelancing on multiple platforms, and there’s a common factor amongst all of them.
Financial transparency has been a taboo topic for generations. However, in our day and age, it’s becoming the opposite. Simply, because when I share this, there might be someone out there who’d get inspired to do the same thing, and become happier.
Thereby, here is what I recently earned via freelancing (sorted by most recent):
- Fiverr Orders – $6.6k (2 Months)
- Medium Earnings – $1.6k (3 Months)
- Client Referrals (Stripe Payments) – $26k (6 months)
- Client Referrals (Crypto Payments) – $11k (6 months)
- Upwork Earnings – $105k (2 Years)
I’m Al, a business consultant in Zurich, Switzerland. I’ve been full-time freelancing for over 4 years in which I’ve earned and learned a lot in that journey. I aim to transfer that knowledge as much as possible.
You’d think that freelancing is highly dependent on the platform, the reputation of the profile, and so on. Truth is, that’s absolutely incorrect. This is what I’m trying to prove by succeeding in multiple platforms. I’ve relied on Upwork for a couple of years before a big situation that resulted in me getting off the platform.
Initially, I felt that I got demotivated. I’ve worked there for a couple of years. I had a fantastic profile and I was growing on a weekly basis. At that time, I thought that due to this problem, I’ll have to rebuild everything I’d created in the past two years, which would consume enormous time.
Then after the sorrow phase, I started working. Now, after a while, I can tell you with confidence that it was purely psychological.
Those platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, etc.) are merely channels to what you can provide.
Once you become good at what you do, the channel almost doesn’t matter. Similarly, if you’re a good web developer, then working at Google is a channel, and working at Netflix is another channel.
Nevertheless, they both do the same purpose, which is to get you to practice what’s inside you. That’s it, once this idea settled in my mind, there was no stopping. I started a Medium profile, and a Fiverr profile. I’m expanding my LinkedIn network. It almost does not matter, because they’re all channels to what I have, which is hard-working talent and dedication to what I love to do.
Here’s a brief of each platform I worked at and some important points associated with it.
I’ve earned the most through freelancing there due to the fact that I’ve worked there for around 2 years. I’ve written an extensive guide on how I believe you could ace it and have a fantastic Upwork presence in almost no time. For credibility purposes, here’s my profile.
My analysis of Upwork: I’ve said it multiple times. Even though I have a current problem with Upwork, the pool of clients they have is a gold mine. For freelancers, the equation of success is simple. Adding hard work to the perfect pitch will lure in clients; the rest is on you. Finally, never take any of those platforms for granted. The smartest way to freelance is to diversify. The moment you’re relying on a single platform is the moment you notice that you have an employer without benefits or guarantees.
Stripe & Cryptocurrency
This channel was a result of hard work. When you are let go of a platform, you have to use your references and referrals, out of those, I’ve used Stripe to work with my clients. Here are some screenshots for reference.
My analysis of the best referral methodology: How you get referrals is an entire network of lessons. There are countless ways you could use word of mouth, for instance, to get more clients. There’s cold pitching, which I don’t recommend. There’s showcasing your work on platforms like Behance, LinkedIn, etc. I recommend the latter as the best approach that works for me. Whenever you’re showcasing what you’re doing, you’re not pitching. You’re conveying what you’re capable of, and that’s the best way to connect with a client.
Moving on from a similar website like Upwork, Fiverr became the next viable option. At the moment, I’m working full-time on this platform and I have no complaints. There are a few differences between it and Upwork, yet eventually, they’re doing a great job in attracting different clients.

My analysis of Fiverr: This platform is growing its client base annually. I don’t know what they’re doing from a marketing perspective, but they’re as good as Upwork in that area. They’re also expanding their client’s ticket size to be as big as Upwork’s clientele. The only difference between Fiverr and any other platform is that there’s passiveness in the process of waiting for a client to contact you. Hence, the focus is on your gig’s showcase.
Medium was an entirely new planet for me, as it solely relies on writing good content and frequency. I’ve worked there for a few months, and it’s one of the most promising freelancing websites many people earned from.
My analysis of Medium: In the writing game, Medium is currently the most dominant. They’ve reached out to the writers that are rejected by publications and allowed them to showcase some amazing work on the platforms. In some cases, their incentives are better than big publications. However, being successful on Medium highly relies on understanding the readers and what they want to read about. This usually takes time, hence, it requires persistence.
